Specimen: Body fluids such as pleural, pericardial, peritoneal and synovial aspirated into a sterile container.
Aspirated material may be transported in a sterile capped syringe (needle removed), sterile tube, or anaerobe collector.
Submit as much fluid as possible.
Unacceptable conditions: Nonsterile or leaking containers
Stability: Ambient: 24 hours
Set up daily. Gram stain included. TAT: Routine culture, 2 days. Anaerobe culture, 5 days (if ordered)
